00:00

This is a short segment from a full short film that I Redesigned from the ground up. Some sounds were recorded just for this in cooperation with other students. My particular focus was on making sure timing for effects was perfect.

00:26

This was an experiment with building and maintaining tension with a random sound effect given to me. In this one I took a horror angle, using consistency and time to build tension. nothing builds tension more then nothing happening than just a little too long. That's when you have the jump scare happen.

00:47

With this one I tried to tell a quick short story. Russian roulette is the main object of attention. You hear as the gun is slid around to each member, until our protagonist, each one a click, but he knows the odds aren't in his favor. I took special care with sounds of the revolver, and ended up using sounds from a Single Action Colt

01:19

This one is real simple, a car accident from inside the car. I had to be picky about the baby sounds, as there weren't a surplus of the kind of sounds I was looking for, and I couldn't include dialogue of any kind. This was another usage of time to build tension.

01:43

This one was more contemplative, using repetition to build tension, I Imagined a rough gunman, in some sort of bunker or similar, slowly clicking through the chambers in his revolver. Add that to the speech in background, and it really paints a picture.

02:11

A little bit of monster sound design. Well guess not since I was given the sound from the get go. the whole sound gave me a Predator vibe, so combined a couple different jungle ambiences to get me the feeling I wanted, and added to help sound clip to punctuate it, giving the feeling of a man stumbling upon a creature with its prey.

02:03

With this one I wanted to turn the sound i was given on its head. While the sound may have started as a scared women running, i turned it into a moment from a sports movie. You are right in the middle of a the race, with the cheers and your heart beat pumping loudly in ears, then you block it all out to focus, everything moving in slow motion.

03:43

This was an experiment to successfully tell a horror story in 1 minute with only sound design. With this one I could even give you a shot list if you wanted, the image so clear in my head. A creature with a strange gate, like their knee is supported by a metal armature, that's gone rusty, dragging something big and metallic with them. This started as an expansion of my first sound design experiment, a test to push the limits of of repetition and time in building tension. I spent hours searching to find just right sounds for what I needed, and spent equally as long tuning the stereo image. Listen with speakers or headphones, both still sound great in my opinion.
